The most important key to understanding the Bible is an individuals attitude!
For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith YHWH: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word. Isaiah 66:2
We must be teachable and we must stand in awe of God. We must be ready and desire to be corrected by Him!
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. Proverbs 9:10
For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. Hebrews 12:6
The second key is obediance to God!
The fear of YHWH is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever. Psalms 111:10
We grow in spiritual maturity as we seek to apply the principles of God's law in our daily decisions and choices.
For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. Hebrews 5:12-14
A vital third key to understanding the Bible is to understand specific verses in scripture in the context of the rest of the Bible. The Apostle Peter explains that no scripture is of a 'private' interpretation. God inspired the whole book and one verse on a subject must be understood in light of other verses on the same subject.
Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. 2 Peter 2:20-21
Just as in most subjects, knowledge of God's WORD is cumulative and must be built up by our own seeking, and by the revelation of the Holy Spirit. The removal of this key is one of Satan's main methods of deception!
For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little: Isaiah 28:10
A fourth key is that we must start with the plain, clear verses on any subject. We should be guided in our understanding of obscure of 'difficult' scriptures by those which are clear, and with prayer. Peter explained that Paul wrote things which were a little difficult to understand and which were often taken out of context.
And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you; As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction. 2 Peter 3:15-16
By utilizing these keys the Bible will come alive for you. If you honestly seek God, obey His WORD, and pray for understanding you will come to know all things.
You will notice none of these keys relies on the interperetations of other men!
