Vatican astronomer Guy Consolmagno recently said that God is supernatural and that science and religion are not opposing principals. These are premises creationists can accept and, in deed, we find Biblical and scientific basis for these premises. Consolmagno has a good beginning in these points.
However, it is obvious that he has a disconnect between a supernatural God and God's ability to create. Also, Consolmagno has a problem understanding the definition of paganism. Paganism is rooted in beliefs that have no scientific, Biblical, historical or moral support. (I am taking the liberty of defining paganism somewhat as Consolmagno seems to define it.) Biblical truth is demonstrated in history, science, law etc.
Young-earth creationists do not consider six day creation as a pagan idea. We find a great body of evidences that support it Biblically. Consolmagno makes it clear that he believes that the six day creation has no scientific support.
The scientific evidences are overwhelmingly in support of sudden and special creation. All life forms appear suddenly in the fossil record. All life forms are very complex. Evidences of the formation of granite show that it happened very rapidly. The evidences of symbiotic relationships demonstrate that life forms were sudden in their appearance together. One thing could not become another thing if one life form requires another life form for its existence.
I must assert at this point, that the real pagan idea is found in evolution. The nature of paganism, as stated above, is that there is a lack of scientific, historical, Biblical and moral support. A careful study of science (true science that relies upon careful observation to arrive at a conclusion - deductive reasoning) reveals that the idea of evolution, not special six day creation, lacks support.
I can only suggest that Consolmagno, as well as each of us, must consider the facts around us and draw the conclusions that those facts support. Starting with an idea is not wrong if it is to seek out evidences that either support of refute that idea. We must be willing to let the facts discovered guide us and not the idea itself.

Because that, when they knew God, they glorified [him] not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
